WELCOME SIGN UNVEILING AND MA’KIT’S DOLL STORYTELLING
We’ll be unveiling brand new SSPL welcome signage created by local Mi’kmaw artist Jessica Jerome after which we’ll be joined by Rowan Currie who will lead us in learning about Mi’kmaw Elder, Ma’kit Poulette, and her experience at Shubenacadie Residential School making rag dolls. There will be a viewing of the short film Ma’kit’s Doll, then kids will be able to create their own rag doll.
Short film synopsis: “When she arrived at age four her doll was taken away from her so she created dolls from her cleaning rags. As an adult Ma’kit searched for a doll that reminded her of the doll that was stolen from her. Ma’kit tells her story and teaches students how she made her rag dolls.”
