Support Your Library

There are many simple ways you can help your library provide better service. Please choose below for additional information.

Book Sales

Book sales occur from time to time at the South Shore Public Libraries Administration Office #15442 Highway #3, Hebbville. Book sale proceeds are used to purchase new books and materials for the South Shore Regional Library. During the past 28 years book sales have raised almost $100,000.

The books for the sale come from a variety of sources. Library staff go through the collection and take out books of all description that are no longer needed. Donated books that are unsuitable for the Library's collection are also included.

Donations

For more information about donations, please see our Donations Policy>>

Please note that certain materials are of little use to the library: for example, encyclopedias over 10 years old.

We love to get...
  • best-sellers published yesterday, or even better, tomorrow
  • hard to find Nova Scotiana, or books about Lunenburg and Queens Counties
  • recent kids' paperback series books in perfect condition
...but we probably can't use:
  • your niece's Ph.D. thesis
  • the memoirs of a Canadian prime minister, published in 1984
  • the biography of the Saskatchewan premier in 1956
  • last February's best-seller
  • anything that's been in your basement for three years
  • your college textbooks (physics has changed)
  • Reader's Digest condensed books

Volunteering

The South Shore Regional Library Board welcomes those who wish to donate their knowledge and skills to enhance public library service in Lunenburg and Queens Counties. Staff feels fortunate to have the generous assistance of over volunteers, who deliver books to the homes of borrows who are elderly or have disabilities, and help with many “behind the scenes” tasks like typing, sorting, preparing book lists, and cleaning books.

All volunteers must complete our Volunteer Application Form and obtain an RCMP/Police Volunteer Criminal Record Check and provide two character references. Volunteer applications are kept on file for six months, and there is often a waiting list. If we cannot fill a need for a volunteer using the applications on file, it will be advertised in the local newspapers and on library bulletin boards.

For more information about volunteering, please see the Volunteer Policy, or contact our Coordinator of Volunteers at 543-2548.
